Pitta & the Menstrual Cycle in Summer
In Ayurveda, Pitta dosha—the energy of fire and water—is intimately connected to transformation, including digestion, metabolism, and hormones. In summer (Pitta season), the natural external heat can amplify internal Pitta, which can lead to heightened menstrual and hormonal symptoms, especially in those already prone to Pitta imbalances.
Here’s a breakdown of how Pitta affects the menstrual cycle during summer, and how to work with it mindfully.
Pitta & the Menstrual Cycle in Summer
How Pitta Imbalance Manifests in the Cycle:
When Pitta is elevated, especially in summer, it can cause:
1. Shortened Cycles
Pitta intensifies metabolism and hormonal turnover.
Result: cycles shorter than 26 days, often with intense ovulation and PMS.
2. Heavy or Hot Bleeding
Blood is a Pitta tissue (rakta dhatu), so excess heat can cause:
Bright red, profuse bleeding
Bleeding that starts suddenly or with a burning sensation
Clotting or mid-cycle spotting (from heat and liver overload)
3. Inflammatory PMS Symptoms
Irritability, anger, restlessness
Headaches, especially with heat or sun exposure
Acne around ovulation or menstruation
Breast tenderness
Loose stools before or during menstruation
4. Increased Ovulatory Heat
Ovulation may feel intense: pelvic discomfort, flushed skin, irritability
Can trigger inflammation, breakouts, or migraines
Ayurvedic Tips to Cool Pitta & Support the Cycle in Summer
Diet:
Favor cooling, hydrating foods:
Coconut, cucumber, mint, watermelon, steamed greens, rose, lime, coriander
Avoid:
Spicy, sour, fermented, fried, salty foods
Caffeine and alcohol (especially red wine)
Support liver with:
Aloe vera juice, bitter greens, turmeric, beets
Lifestyle:
Avoid sun during peak hours (10am–3pm)
Get morning light for circadian balance but moon bathe in the evening
Prioritize rest and gentle movement over high-intensity workouts
Cooling Self-Care:
Rose water spray to the face and chest
Abhyanga with coconut oil (especially before bed)
Cooling pranayama: sitali (video below)
Restorative yoga, especially legs-up-the-wall
Somatic & Emotional Insight
Pitta governs intensity, drive, and perfectionism. In summer, this can overheat emotionally:
Premenstrual anger, frustration, judgment, burnout
Somatic tools to balance:
Grounding breath into belly
Touching cool surfaces (stone, water, grass)
Orienting: slowing down and expanding visual awareness to calm reactivity
